Welcome to the "Real" Denver

Over the years, I've heard every misconception that a relocating buyer has about Denver. Let me take this time to make sure you know what you're getting into when you move to Denver, Colorado.

WHAT'S THE WEATHER LIKE IN DENVER?

Most people think that our weather is much like that of Alaska - snowy and cold. Not that we don't get snow and cold, but it is rare and winter is pleasant almost all the time. Our sun shines over 300 days per year - more than even San Diego! Rarely do I wear a heavy winter coat with all the accoutrements - a turtleneck sweater and blazer usually will do. The key to dressing in Denver is "layers". In the winter, we're cold in the morning, warm during the day and cooling down in the late afternoon. It's not unusual for outdoor cafes to be open all winter because the sun is warm and watching the world go by is a fun activity!

We have more than one season here - not just winter! All four seasons are well represented in Denver and there's something to do outside for everyone. River rafting, biking, hiking and camping are just some of the activities. Golf and tennis are played outdoors almost year round. It's not unusual to be playing golf in February. Denver is also known for its beautiful parks, bike paths and gardens.

ARE THERE COWBOYS THERE?

When I first came to Denver in 1971, I could honestly say that there were cowboys around town. Usually they came down from the mountains on weekends in their pickup trucks with gun racks to shop for supplies. The way people talk now, you'd think there were cattle drives down 17th Street! Actually... that does happen during the National Western Stock Show (
www.NationalWestern.com.) This is the best time to get a glimpse of real cowboys! Make sure you plan to attend - great fun for the whole family.

UNLESS YOU LIKE TO SKI, THERE'S NOTHING TO DO

There was a time when Denver rolled up its streets at 10:00 PM. No longer. Denver is a world class city for theatre and the arts. Whether your tastes run to Broadway extravaganzas, opera, the symphony, regional and experimental theatre, there's top-notch entertainment waiting for you. The Denver Center Theatre Company won a Tony Award a few years ago for the nation's best regional theatre. That's impressive. There are also tons and tons of fine restaurants, shops and sights throughout Denver. Don't forget about sports - Between the Broncos, Avalanche, Rockies, DU Hockey and many others, there's a team out there for you to root for.

DENVER IS SO FAR AWAY FROM EVERYWHERE

Denver International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the nation. You can get to just about anywhere from here. The baggage fiascos of opening day have long since passed. You really appreciate returning to DIA from travels out of state or out of the country when you compare airport amenities and the ease of getting around.

WHAT'S THE ONE THING ABOUT DENVER THAT'S NOT SO GREAT?

The one problem about Denver is that you can expect to get a lot more out of town visitors. After they visit once and see how great the city is, expect more visits! Depending on who's visiting, that could be either good or bad!

Now that you've gotten the inside information about Denver, you're almost a native (a status that is very much admired here). WELCOME!
